Sunday morning was an early start with a hour long ride to the Northern Lighthouse Community Church, A church plant in Lincoln, NE. Most of the time we are asked to wear our yellow Sea To Sea shirts so that we can be identified. But on Sunday I decided not to. It is the one day that I can blend into the community and not be a cyclist. This gives me an opportunity to ask people about their story as oppose to just telling mine. Sea To Sea is about raising awareness as well as funds and that applies to me as well. I need to be reminded that this is not just about my journey, my kms pedalled, my cyclist woes. I couldn't have picked a better place to have my heart and eyes opened. This church is made up of the poor and serving the poor with an active prison ministry outreach. They were featured in the February 2008 Banner. These people didn't need me to tell them about poverty. I needed to learn from them.
Some people had stayed behind to be security at the camp and decided to attend the Lutheran Church that was across the street. When the congregation heard about what we were doing, within 2 hours had opened their air conditioned facilities, supplied all sorts of treats, snacks and cold drink-YES there was ice! and opened the new gym for us to hang out in and sleep in for the night. A true Oasis from the 100F humid weather outside. We thank the family and congregation of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for their kindness and hospitality.
