There was a small road joining the two highways and as I looked at it, I thought- I bet with some lead in I could coast the whole thing, 2kms. So I took the turn, unclipped and away I rode. Although I lost speed on the first uphill, I maintained my coast and made it all the way. COOL!
Soon we were at the Lookout over the falls.
Unfortunately while taking pictures my bike fell over and the bracket holding my basket bent so much it was dragging against my rear wheel. Scott, who is from my church, held my bike while I tried to bend it back.
I must have developed stronger arms than I thought as I snapped the support pole in the process. This is where carrying duct tape comes in handy so a quick patch job was done to get me into town.
It was then down to the main entrance to hike to the base of the falls. Less than a mile and a beautiful stroll.
I then headed into Ithaca to meet Pieter to find a bike shop. As we coasted into the city I looked up as the houses rose on the hills around the downtown. Now this could have been a beautiful view but all I could think was...I bet I get to climb up and get a close up of those houses. I was right. No luck in finding a bike shop or Pieter and our route took an extreme incline through the city that I have lovingly named-THE ITHACA PASS. Anyone who has joined the tour after the Rockies and were disappointed that they didn't do a mountain pass can rest assured that today they did an equally difficult feat. It was 5kms(I clocked it) and steeper than most of the passes we had done. I was able to make it up but I think the steep change caused the migraine that started setting in. I quickly took my medication which mostly worked on the headache but caused me to loose all strength for the next 2 hours. Marge and Peter caught up with me and we braved the rest of the route together. It was great to have their company and support.
Marge unfortunately had her 2nd flat in as many days and I when I found a few staples in her tires I advised her to quit touring through the office supplies stores!
My basket bracket was still duct taped together and with no bike shops in sight, I decided to try a motorcycle shop I was passing. It was operated by 2 British guys who specialised in restoration. Could they restore my bracket? Well it couldn't be welded but they make a custom brace that would hold it until I got home. They were really amazing at the scope of Sea To Sea and did the repair for free. Very Kind.
Struggling with the remnants of the headache we finished the ride and were welcomed to an incredible dinner hosted by Valley CRC.
We had a sandwich called a Speedy, grilled marinated meat on Italian bread-scrumptious and ice cream and brownies.
It was a long day so an early evening is a goal. Only 3 rides left.

Your blog is very creative, when people read this it widens our imaginations.
Gayle you take the BEST pictures! 3 more rides! Woo hoo! Keep pedalling and we'll keep praying!
Even though you have faced a few challenges with your bike, you continue to press on with great spirit. Keep it up, Gayle. Your almost done! You have truly been an inspiration.

Gayle, it must be so exciting to know you've almost made it! The girls can't wait to hear your "I DID IT" cheer on BX93 on Monday.
Please give Grandpa Mike a hug for us.
Go Gayle, biker babe!

Wasn't that a fun gorge walk where you get to literally walk up the creek? I lost my balance on a tipping rock at one spot when we were there in early August and had my feet fly out from under me. I somehow managed to go with the "flow" of the fall, (protecting my camera -- of course) banging up my elbows a bit and ending with an inevitable, solid little clunk on the back of my head -- at which point I thought of you and your accident.
In my case, the most damage was done to my ego as I sheepishly approached Pieter, Jonathan, Derk and Nancy at the base of the waterfall. From the front I looked normal, albeit a little dazed, but my entire back was skidded with green, ripe creek slime. Yum! I hadn't felt that silly since falling into our muddy creek two years ago in my Sunday skirt while trying to convince Jonathan that it was easy to walk across the tree bridge! (That just brought up memories of miscalculating a jump and plunging into the concrete "moat" that encircles the Tour Montparnasse in Paris nearly 30 years ago, much to Pieter's chagrin. It was a cold, wet Metro ride home. Hmmm.)
Sounds like your bike took the fall in your case, Gayle. A bummer, but better your bike than you! And it gave the motorcycle shop guys the opportunity to hear about C2C.
You confirmed my suspicions about the grades in and around Ithaca. Pieter and I asked ourselves why anyone would think that those super steep hills would be a great place to build a house, let alone a whole city/university -- other than the view of course. I think everyone in that place must have amazingly cut calves as a result. I'm really curious what it's like in winter conditions.
Glad to hear you were able to overcome the migraine and continue pressing on today. Enjoy your final 3 rides. We'll see you in Jersey City. Praying for safety. Watch out for those cows!
Gayle! Almost done! Unfortunately I will not be able to cheer you on at the end, as I am working Friday night and had to stay behind in London. Wish I could be there at the Atlantic ocean. The bruises are still there but slowyly healing and turning a shade of yellow instead of purple, red and brown :). Maybe they will still be there to show off when you return. See you soon!
Just catching up on your blog. Sounds like you are ready to come--and rightfully so, as you are almost done. And I pray that you may finish well--not only with biking the kms you have left--but also in "making peace as far as it depends on you". Sounds like you've made some bold moves at peace-making--so way to go!! Looking forward to having you back. You've been missed!!
