080808-Lucky Day

Our third long day I headed out with optimism. I don’t know who told us that it was downhill and flat had obliviously never been through this part of the state. It looks a lot like Southwestern Ontario with rough county roads. The sun again was getting hot and I was running a little late. I was supposed to be into camp early for sweep duties and so I had to calculate what a good strategy was. I decided to bike over the Mississippi River and into Wisconsin and then SAG if from there- about 2/3 of the ride. First, riding the bridge over the River was definitely a scary moment.

The lane was narrow with no shoulder, there was only a 3 foot concrete barrier between me and a 100’ drop to the river and traffic was not exactly patient.

When I made the decision to sacrifice part of the ride( knowing that I would be making those kms up later) I decided that I needed to find something cool to make it worth it. Sure enough, a sign for Spook Caves showed that it was just off the route. I had to check that out. Bill Cory and I headed down for a private tour.

The staff was great getting us through the ½ mile stream that flowed through the caves.

Only bats, frogs and salamanders inhabit this dark space but the owner has a beautiful light system that highlighted the features. At points the cave was so low we had to duck into the boat.

At the end was a glass painted that had been donated by a local artist. It showed a lady kneeling at the foot of a stone cross and was called “Rock of Ages”

A beautiful journey and time well wasted.
Our SAG ride in was a sad one as we picked up Don from his visit to the hospital. Don had fallen in loose gravel to avoid swerving into traffic in a construction area. He has broken his collar bone and will not be able to finish his tour. It is sad for us to loose another one from our family. For Don,it is also the end of trip with his daughter who was going to join us in Grand Rapids so that they could ride together for the last 2 weeks. Pray for smooth and quick healing of both Don’s body and heart.

Gayle,

Yes, you are living right these days! 080808. Lucky days. Wait, isn't luck the same as "God is good?"

I'm so glad that you got your shorts out of the dumpster and your camera out of hock from the Lutherans. Who says truth is stranger than fiction?

Great to hear you making it through these long days!

Art has been gathering up his gear, seam sealing his tent, and trying to think of what else he needs to do before he goes to join the tour.

We've been checking out the cadet Camporee website, looking at pictures and videos to see what the cadets are doing. It looks like it has been wet and muddy there. We saw a couple of pictures of Gerrit. Hopefully their sleeping bags are staying dry.

Gayle
Think I saw something moving out north a couple of days ago. Was that you waving??? Hope you liked your ride across Iowa. You probably had some of the best weather we ever have in early August. Sucess to you as you get closer and closer to your home and then on to New Jersey! Also I continue to look forward to your blogs.

Update on the International Cadet Camporee: It has rained so much there that they are doing an emergency evacuation, due to all the mud and more rain in the forecast. Wow! The boys seem to still be in good spirits, and the counsellors are working to co-ordinate everybody being able to leave. It's disappointing that they have to come home early, and we pray for safety, but hopefully they have lots of fun memories already.
