And the Journey Begins

So yesterday morning, we dipped our tires into the Pacific.
I also opened my first prayer square from my 6yr old goddaughter, Emily. It was a beautiful start to a beautiful day.
A clear sunny day, apparently I was too pessimistic about the rain. The press got sight of the streamers and my hair which lead to photos and interviews. The Banner even took a shot at my Tattoo.
It was a hot day though so after many photo ops with press and such and staggered start, I felt my first migraine kick in. $200 worth of meds and I was on my way with my group.
About 20 miles along the bike trail in Seattle, one of our group felt off her bike. Sure enough my Mcgyver kit of quick repairs had people surprised. Yes, I did bring cable ties and duct tape...baskets are handy. However, after a few of minutes, our injured party was disoriented and after a few questions(Kristie would be proud of my assessment skills), I called our nurse and then 911.

Some cute and helpful firemen arrived and it was a trip to the ER for our friend while we continued on. So it was a long first day...10 hours on the road only 5 on my bike and my first 80kms done(actually it was close to 100 as we had a 15kms ride down to the beach.
I was very tired and grumpy by the time I got to camp. But was very grateful to two of the younger guys Nick and Joel who help with gear adjustment and were just generally supportive and encouraging, holding back their ride so that we didn't have to come in alone.
Joel caught me in the gear truck just as I was heading to the shower. "So, Gayle, how does it feel to have finished?" "Joel, I need to get to the shower and be cold and wet. I can't deal with chit-chat right now." He laughed "No problem, I understand." And so it has begun!

Way to go Gayle!!! You're on the way and remember each day you will get stronger. Don't get discouraged. Take it one day at a time. That's how we are supposed to live right? Praying for you all and getting "antsy" to get going myself. It was so good to hear from one of you. Thanks. Rita

I love how John is so NOT letting his bike touch the water or his shoes. There's a seasoned veteran for you!! Know that we think of all three of you often and pray daily. You are all an inspiration to me! Good things happening here too!!! God is present!
