Back in the Saddle
Well, I've started again. Yesterday was out to Mount Bridges-50kms round trip in 2 hr and 45mins. This was encouraging. After a week off, I have been able to maintain my average speed and general conditioning. I also took some breaks along the way. Nothing major, just a few short times off the bike to munch on some fruit and have a drink. I think this helped with the boredom. It broke the trip down for me although it adds time. I was talking to Heather about the trip as she volunteered as the support crew last time. She says that there is a support vehicle about every 20kms with drinks and such. It freaks me out to think of some of the distances that they have planned( Like week 5...550 miles, let's do the math, 90 miles per day...140kms...three times what I did yesterday). But maybe if I think of the shorter steps, I can overcome my panic. I can do 20kms...no problem...I just need to do it 5-7 times a day. Let's see how it goes.

Follow my logic on this one....The average daily distance for C2C 2008 is 109km, so if you can do 50 in just under 3 hours you should be able to do an average day in about 5 1/2. Which means with an 8:00 am start (and thats on the late side) you should be in camp by early afternoon. Now, that's an average - some days will be longer BUT some days will be shorter!!! If you're in camp by noon that gives you a whole afternoon for drinking margaritas. Now, tell me there's anything bad about that. ~Heather
Oh Baby, I don't disagree. The problem is the week where they have us doing 90miles/140kms per day. If I can even get that far, I'm going to be all over those margaritas!!!
Now John V has decided to do this advneture too. He has promised that if I help him with the fund-raising, he's going to get me through 140kms. I'm all over that. Here's what I'm picturing, ME with my margarita, feet on the handle bars lounging back while John tows me by bungee cord. I can probably do 40kms that way!
Yes, but by the week you're expected to do 140km days you'll have been at it for four or five weeks and you'll have built up stamina and be better able to cope with longer distances, you'll know most people on the tour so you won't feel like you're doing it alone and you and the Pearl will have a wonderful symbiotic relationship that will see you through the tough times (cough, cough, gag, gag) Focus on the good stuff and the rest will come. And, honey, me and Jon will be in Jersey City with the biggest pitcher of margaritas you've ever seen in your life - and if he doesn't show up you know we're knocking on his door. ~H
I dunno, Heather, if she's drinking margaritas in the afternoon... do you really think she's going to be making those 8am starts?
